the origin of w engines was done by volkswagen by by using a w6 in volkswagen passat w6 but it failed and was lower at configuration than other competitors so it was discontinued but w engines are still made like in bently continental GT speed which uses w12 engine and in buggati chiron supersport with a w16 which produces a stunning 1500HP .
the origin of v engine was made long back before w"s in around 1900 the first car producers with v engines were ford then it spread through many other industries currently v 6 , v 8 and v 12 are mainly produced by car industries like in lamborghini aventedor sv, svj v12 is used and in ford mustang v8 is used.
COMPARISON
now lest come to the topic for which you are reading the blog so which is better a v12 or a w12
so, if i have to tell in short words w12 engine is all about power and torque and v12 engine are balanced for power torque and economy so
so a 6 liter w12 engine can put out around 800 bhp and 900n/m torque &
a 6 liter v12 can put around 700 bhp and 650n/m torque max
and also the top speed of w12 engine is higher than v12 engine because a w12 can take over more rpms and heat .but in acceleration v12 beats w12 because as v12 size is larger w12 is smaller and w12 needs more rpm and heat to work at its full potential.
but in terms of economy and pollution v12 beats w12 . so w engines are only produced in high performance cars not in normal cars
and also w12 engine has 30% more chance of engine failure than v12 so its more unrelaible
